Nearly half of the country of Belize has been set aside as Protected Areas, guaranteeing future generations that our pristine jungle and rainforest areas will still be there for their enjoyment. In the Cayo District, covering about a quarter of the country, only the western fringe has been developed, the balance now protected as national parks, wilderness and forest preserve. The only humans one encounters there today are archaeologists and various biological and environmental scientists. No one is allowed to live or build any structures in this huge wilderness except with special permission from the government. There are untold places where no modern human has walked since the decline of the Maya civilization a dozen centuries ago. The area abounds with jungle wildlife, most with little or no fear of people.
Casa Maya offers High Adventure Treks into the Vaca Plateau and Chiquibul Wilderness for visitors seeking an in-depth experience in tropical jungle and rainforest environments. These are strenuous treks in which you are involved as a participant rather than a spectator. Leaving from Casa Maya Resort, each trek is organized as a 4-day adventure, penetrating deep into the wilderness, enjoying areas few others will ever experience. Casa Maya can also organize custom treks and expeditions for visitors with special interests.
Because permits are required to travel and stay overnight in the wilderness, High Adventure Treks must be booked at least a month in advance.
