Deeeeep in the interior of the Chiquibul Wilderness is a wild river seldom visited by humans, a river with the melodious name of Raspacula. Deeper still is the mysterious Monkey Tail, a tributary of the Raspacula, that flows through an area where the only residents are the wild animals themselves, as no humans are allowed to live there.

The Raspacula Wild River Adventure will take you into the heart of the Chiquibul Wilderness, an upland rainforest jungle area rich in biodiversity. The animals and birds along the way rarely, if ever, see humans. The river banks are home to jaguars, pumas, ocelots and margays, rare Bairds Tapir, Morelette Crocodile, howler monkeys and numerous other jungle creatures, plus nearly 300 varieties of birds, including the rare and endangered Scarlet Macaw and Ocellated Turkey. Hidden In this barely explored jungle wilderness, are significant Maya ruins, sacred sacrificial caves, foreboding sink holes, natural arches, disappearing rivers and other geological features yet to be discovered.

Guests will gather at Casa Maya and then be transported by four-wheel drive Land Rovers to the research station where you will have a tour of the surrounding jungle and spend the night. The following morning you will be transported several miles deeper into the jungle to start the canoe trip down the Monkey Tail. This is a “river-of-no-return’ journey, once you are on the water there is no turning back. The only way to go is down river through wild roadless dense jungle to the ultimate destination at Guacamallo Crossing on the Macal River.

Special provisions can be made to schedule trips at any time for groups of 4 or more.
